The Himalayan nation's Electoral Landscape Witnesses Major Alliance Forged By Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant development ahead of next year's general election, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the wake of large-scale and fatal youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This promise follows the violent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.

"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.

The September uprising was sparked by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding accusations of systemic graft in politics.

Details of the New Electoral Partnership

According to the official pact, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political leadership. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.

Wider Government Consultations Taking Place

In a separate event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with several leading political leaders. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the protests.

Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a shared duty. The message reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
