Several professionals stated the demand for retatrutide could be connected to the increasing cost of approved slimming products such as Mounjaro.
Legal Status and Enforcement
Marketing the unapproved drug on TikTok or Telegram is illegal in the United Kingdom, as it is an unlicensed drug that must not be promoted or distributed for personal consumption under the British medical regulations.
Several influencers try to sidestep the rules by calling to the substance as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. Investigations also discovered communities with up to 9,000 participants selling retatrutide using the platform's integrated discovery tool, which operates like a public directory. Typing “retatrutide” immediately brings up groups with thousands of members, populated with photos of weight loss, positive reviews and detailed instructions for mixing or administering at home.
Within minutes of joining one community, a seller shared contact information, where the majority of transactions occur. The vendor sent an guidebook and guaranteed shipping within 48 hours. When questioned whether the substance was authentic, one vendor responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a photo of a supposed laboratory certificate. Within these groups, posts display black plastic packages with Royal Mail labels, claiming to contain new batches. One message read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”
Customers can select between powder vials, mixed at home with sterile water, or ready-to-use injectors usually sold at 160 pounds for 20 milligrams. When questioned how long a injector should last, sellers give conflicting answers ranging from a few weeks to “depends on your body”.
Service Moderation and Safety Actions
A representative for Telegram said it regularly moderated harmful material on its platform including material that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization added that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.
Medical Expert Warnings
“People are administering materials they can’t verify. Even if the science behind retatrutide is valid, these digital products may not include what they advertise,” said a pharmacy expert, the director of pharmaceutical services at a pharmacy service.
A medical professional of an online medical service connected the surge in demand to recent price rises for authorized slimming medications such as Mounjaro. “With prices increasing, individuals are using social media. But fake treatments are highly risky. You cannot know what’s inside or whether the conditions they were produced in was clean,” she explained.
Her staff has previously seen individuals harmed by self-injection from unconfirmed suppliers. “We recognize the frustration, but buying from Telegram or WhatsApp is gambling with your health,” said Wyllie. “These substances could be contaminated or incorrectly dosed.”
Producer Statement
A spokesperson from Eli Lilly stated retatrutide was in third stage clinical trials and had not been evaluated or authorized by any regulatory agency anywhere in the world. “Consequently at this time no one can sell [it] for human use,” they explained, noting that any product “misleadingly claiming itself as a Lilly investigational product not yet authorized … may expose patients to possibly significant medical dangers”.
